The family of the late General Sani Abacha has refuted claims that he was responsible for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, insisting that former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), should be held accountable.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Mohammed Abacha, son of the late general, dismissed IBB’s claims in his book, A Journey in Service, where he suggested that Abacha played a key role in the controversial decision.
The Abacha family accused certain individuals of attempting to rewrite history and manipulate public perception for political or personal gain. Mohammed Abacha urged Nigerians to be wary of revisionist narratives, emphasizing that his father’s legacy should not be tainted by unfounded accusations.
He reiterated that General Abacha remained a loyal ally to Babangida until his death and even played a crucial role in ensuring IBB’s safety during a period of political unrest.
“It is important to clarify that General Sani Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief at the time of the annulment. The decision was made solely under General Babangida’s administration, as he wielded absolute power at the time,” the statement read.
The Abacha family also expressed disappointment that A Journey in Service failed to provide an accurate and objective account of history. “As one public commentator aptly noted, honesty, sincerity, and integrity are qualities not typically associated with the author,” the statement concluded.
