Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South in the National Assembly, has urged former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, to write a book detailing his experiences in power and shedding light on the events surrounding the 1966 coup. Abaribe made the call while reacting to former President Ibrahim Babangida’s newly released book, which addresses key moments in Nigeria’s military history.
Speaking at a press conference in Aba on Thursday ahead of his 70th birthday, Abaribe stressed that Nigerians deserve an accurate historical account from Gowon, particularly regarding claims that the January 1966 coup was an Igbo coup. “He noted that Babangida’s revelations have helped dispel long-held misconceptions about the coup and called on Gowon to do the same.
“We are still waiting for that book by General Gowon because he was a key player in the events of that period, including the mistakes and missteps that shaped the country’s history,” Abaribe said.
The senator also took issue with parts of Babangida’s book where the former president suggested that some controversial decisions during his tenure were beyond his control.
On judicial matters, Abaribe expressed surprise that Justice Binta Nyako continues to preside over the case of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, despite having previously recused herself. He called on the Federal Government to secure Kanu’s release through political means, warning that his continued detention is fueling criminal activities in the South East.
The senator also urged the Igbo people to unite for regional development and commended Governor Alex Otti, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and Governor Peter Mbah for their leadership achievements.
Reflecting on his upcoming birthday, Abaribe acknowledged the high mortality rate in Nigeria and expressed gratitude for his life. He also announced that he would be unveiling a book as part of his milestone celebration.
