Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced that his administration is in the advanced stages of acquiring the Umuahia ring-fence of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), in a bid to extend reliable electricity supply to eight local government areas not currently covered by Geometric Power.
Governor Otti made this known on Monday during a reception hosted by Geometric Power, following the commissioning and inspection of Aba Power’s new 2 x 15MVA Ogbor Hill Substation. The event was graced by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who performed the official commissioning.
The governor revealed that discussions between the Abia State Government and Geometric Power have reached an advanced stage. He instructed the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities to initiate talks with the company on channeling excess power from Aba into the Umuahia ring-fence.
“Ordinarily, excess power would be injected into the national grid. However, with deregulation, we are exploring the option of wheeling 80 to 88 megawatts—or any available excess—directly into Umuahia. Once we finalize the acquisition, that power will be directed to the area,” Otti said, adding that a formal offer will be presented on Tuesday.
Governor Otti also praised former President Obasanjo for his foresight in granting Aba a ring-fenced status during his administration, a move that laid the groundwork for localized power regulation now endorsed by the federal government. He extended gratitude to Professor Bart Nnaji, Chairman and CEO of Geometric Power Group, for his investment in the state.
In his remarks, former President Obasanjo commended Governor Otti’s leadership, describing Aba as a hub of industrial activity deserving of stable electricity. He congratulated both Governor Otti and Prof. Nnaji on the progress made so far.
Professor Nnaji, while presenting an overview of the Aba Integrated Power Project, disclosed that the initiative has already cost over $800 million. He acknowledged the key roles played by both Obasanjo and Otti in bringing the project to fruition.
