Leaders from Ikwuano and Umuahia in Abia State have called on the Federal Government to expedite the completion of the 51-kilometer Umuahia-Ikwuano-Ikot Ekpene road, which links Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia on Monday, the leaders emphasized that the timely release of funds would ensure swift completion of the project, alleviating the suffering of road users.
The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi, highlighted the road’s importance in facilitating quicker access to medical care, particularly for critically ill patients.
The stakeholders also urged the government to accelerate work on the remaining sections of the road, particularly the gully erosion control efforts in Ikwuano and the deteriorating portions in the Umuahia axis.
In his remarks, Sam Onuigbo, the South East representative on the North East Development Commission (NEDC) board, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for approving an additional 14.37 billion naira on February 3, 2025, for the project. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the construction of a Federal Secretariat at Ekeoba, Ohuhu, in Umuahia.
However, some community members criticized the contractor for the slow pace of work, urging for greater efficiency in project execution.
