Moses Paul, an aide to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has explained why some of Obi’s former associates in the banking and business sectors have been avoiding him in public.
Speaking in an interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica, Paul claimed that fear of retribution from President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made many of Obi’s business associates distance themselves from him.
He recounted an instance in Kigali, Rwanda, where Aliko Dangote and several prominent Nigerian businessmen allegedly avoided being seen with Obi during a conference.
“There was an occasion when I traveled to Rwanda with Mr. Peter Obi. Alhaji Aliko Dangote was in Kigali for a conference alongside many top Nigerian businessmen and bankers,” Paul said.
“You won’t believe that people who were once close to Peter Obi in the banking sector were deliberately avoiding him out of fear that the Tinubu government might retaliate against them or their businesses.”
Expressing concern over the situation, Paul described it as alarming, stating that in the 21st century, no one should be afraid of associating with an opposition leader.
“This shouldn’t be happening in a country like Nigeria, which is seen as the future of the black race,” he added.
