Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday called for stronger legislative cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, including more structured exchange programmes between the two countries’ parliaments.
Akpabio made the appeal when British High Commissioner Peter Vowles paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Abuja. He said the longstanding historical, economic and trade ties between the two nations should be sustained and expanded through closer collaboration among lawmakers.
“The history of Nigeria will not be complete without the United Kingdom. For us in Nigeria, London is like a second home,” Akpabio said. He added that the relationship “permeates into the economic sphere and trade, and we would like to deepen the relationship in the area of legislation because we have a lot to learn from you.”
The Senate president noted that UK House of Commons members occasionally visit Nigeria to observe parliamentary proceedings, while Nigerian legislative committees have visited the British House of Lords and House of Commons. He urged more organised exchanges to strengthen institutional links and improve legislative practices.
Akpabio also praised King Charles III for the hospitality shown to President Bola Tinubu and his entourage during the Nigerian leader’s recent state visit to the UK. He said the monarch recognises Nigeria’s strategic importance to Africa’s economy and security.
Turning to investment, Akpabio encouraged British investors to look at opportunities in Nigeria’s oil and mining sectors. He said the government had improved the ease of doing business and that investors could repatriate their funds, adding that the country offered profitable prospects.
Vowles said he had come to convey warm regards to the leadership of the National Assembly and to reaffirm the depth of relations between the two countries. He stated that the British government wanted to continue deepening the partnership and would support areas where Nigeria required UK assistance.
“We have a longstanding relationship with the National Assembly, both houses. We will continue to partner with you where you require UK support and partnership,” the envoy said.
