The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee investigating the persistent poor quality of telecommunications services in Nigeria has ordered the chief executives of MTN, Airtel, Globacom, Mafab Communications and other operators to appear before it within seven days.
The committee directed the executives to report at 2 p.m. on October 28, 2026, at Hearing Room 447 of the New Building of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. They must explain the continued decline in network quality and their failure to honour earlier invitations.
The ultimatum was issued on Wednesday during a public hearing in Abuja after the adoption of two motions sponsored by Reps Sunday Umeha and Afam Ogene. Lawmakers expressed displeasure that invited operators, including MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications, had not appeared as previously requested.
The committee instructed the Nigerian Communications Commission to ensure full compliance. Operators must also submit all relevant documents on or before the appearance date and account for the factors behind the service failures affecting millions of subscribers and businesses.
Committee chairman Rep. Olumide Osoba (APC, Ogun) warned that any chief executive who fails to appear could face an arrest summons. He said reliable telecommunications services are now critical to Nigeria’s economy, supporting not only voice and data but essential commercial activities such as Point of Sale transactions.
Osoba noted that the House set up the ad hoc committee to probe widespread subscriber complaints and identify the causes of the poor service quality. He expressed concern that invited chief executives had avoided direct engagement by offering excuses or sending lower-ranking officials, stressing that the CEOs themselves were best placed to explain operational challenges and improvement plans.
Rep. Ibe Osonwa criticised the operators for what he described as disregard for the House despite the substantial revenue they generate in Nigeria. He said companies benefiting from the Nigerian market could not ignore legislative invitations when lawmakers seek answers on issues affecting customers and the wider economy.
Osoba urged the NCC to enforce the directive, reiterating that the operators must appear on October 28 with the required documents and explanations.
