The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the screening of aspirants vying for its Anambra State governorship ticket ahead of the party’s primary election scheduled for April 5, 2025.
The screening exercise, which began on Friday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, is being conducted by a committee inaugurated by the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The committee is chaired by former Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shema, and is expected to conclude today (Saturday).
The seven aspirants who obtained nomination forms and are undergoing screening include Hon. Chukuma Michael Umeoji, Prof. Obiora Francis Okonkwo, Nicholas Chukwujeku Ukachukwu, Sir Paul Chukwuma, Johnbosco Obinna Onunkwo, Valentine Ozigbo, and Edozie Madu.
Addressing the committee, Ganduje urged them to ensure a transparent and fair process to prevent post-primary disputes.
“We have confidence in you to do justice in what you are assigned to do. Ensure that you don’t leave gaps that could lead to litigations within or outside the party,” he said.
Speaking after his screening, former APC National Auditor, Sir Paul Chukwuma, expressed optimism about his chances, describing himself as the best candidate to represent the party.
“I came prepared for the screening, and I am happy it went well. I am ready for the primary and hopeful to emerge as the candidate. I am also convinced that APC will win the Anambra election,” Chukwuma said.
Commenting on recent defections to the APC, Chukwuma welcomed the influx of new members, stating that the party remains open to qualified aspirants.
“I am happy that my brothers from other parties are identifying with the APC. We should allow anyone who feels qualified to contest. Together, we will work to clean Anambra and return the state to the people,” he added.
He also expressed support for the party’s decision to adopt the indirect primary system, emphasizing his readiness for any mode of selection.
“I am comfortable with either direct or indirect primaries. I have worked hard to build the party, and I believe our members are ready to support me. While all aspirants are qualified, I have an edge due to my experience. I am confident that once I emerge as the candidate, everyone will unite behind me to rescue the state,” he stated.
