The Anambra State Government has begun the distribution of Lenacapavir (LEN PrEP), a long-acting injectable drug aimed at preventing HIV infection, in a major step toward reducing new HIV cases across the state.
The rollout, described by health officials as a significant breakthrough in the fight against HIV/AIDS, introduces a more convenient prevention option for people at risk of infection. Unlike daily preventive pills, LEN PrEP is administered only twice a year.
The free medication is currently available at selected health facilities, including Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Federal Medical Centre, the Trauma Centre in Oba, and Comprehensive Health Centres in Ukpo and Neni, as well as OSS Awka.
Speaking at the launch, Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, said prevention remains a key strategy in eliminating HIV, adding that the introduction of LEN PrEP would strengthen protection for vulnerable individuals and high-risk communities.
He warned against the sale or diversion of the medication, emphasizing that it is strictly meant for public health use. Obidike also commended Chukwuma Soludo for supporting healthcare improvements in the state, noting that increased HIV testing among residents partly explains the state’s high prevalence figures.
The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Maureen Umeakuewulu, described the programme as timely amid rising HIV infections among adolescents. She praised Bola Tinubu for ensuring Anambra was included among the states selected for the initiative.
Also speaking, the Anambra State AIDS Programme Coordinator, Tonia Mbagwu, disclosed that the state has an HIV prevalence rate of 2.4 percent — the highest in the South-East region — with over 56,223 people currently living with HIV.
Representatives of the World Health Organization, NASCP, NACA, AHNI, AHF, CHAI, KNCV, JHPIEGO, and other health partners attended the event, which concluded with the official inauguration of the programme and the administration of the injectable medication to four eligible beneficiaries.
