The All Progressives Congress in Imo State has announced the formation of a “Broom Coalition” aimed at consolidating support for its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the party claiming confidence of securing at least 80 per cent of the votes cast in the state.
Dr Onwuasoanya FCC Jones, the APC Publicity Secretary in Imo, disclosed the arrangement in a press statement, saying it was designed to protect voters’ choices and prioritise the interests of Imo people. He added that a few opposition parties in the state had indicated willingness to join the ruling party, while some opposition candidates had already abandoned their party tickets and were working with the APC.
The party said it was preparing to formally welcome opposition leaders and candidates at campaign rallies scheduled across the state. It specifically urged candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress and Action Peoples Party who had reportedly approached it for collaboration to abandon their existing platforms and join the APC in their respective wards.
“The only coalition recognised in Imo State is the ‘Broom Coalition’, which guarantees that all participants in the coalition arrangement shall work for and deliver only APC candidates across their constituencies,” Jones stated.
Any politician seeking to take part in the proposed coalition must formally defect to the APC and support its candidates across all constituencies in the state, the party said. The announcement comes as political parties and aspirants prepare for the 2027 general elections, with the APC’s proposed coalition raising questions about the extent of opposition realignment and its implications for electoral competition across Imo’s constituencies.
