The Ebonyi State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has strongly condemned the arrest of Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), calling for his immediate release.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, APGA State Chairman, Chris Emmanuel, described the arrest as deeply concerning, particularly because it was linked to the Ebonyi State Police Command. He revealed that the party was investigating those behind the arrest while engaging with other Igbo youth associations to determine the circumstances surrounding Igboayaka’s detention.
The party alleged that the arrest might have been politically motivated, following Igboayaka’s victory in the OYC’s fourth National Election Convention, held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, in Owerri, Imo State.
“It beats our imagination that this abduction was traced to our state while the incident occurred in Owerri, shortly after Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka was declared the winner of the OYC election,” the statement read.
“We in APGA see this as politically motivated, as the candidate backed by the Ebonyi State Governor may have lost the bid for the OYC presidency.”
APGA called on Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to clarify the situation and address Igbo youths regarding the circumstances of Igboayaka’s arrest.
“The alleged abduction of Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka by the Ebonyi State Police Command is said to have been carried out on the alleged orders of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, whose preferred candidate lost the election,” the party stated.
“As an opposition party in Ebonyi State, we are closely monitoring developments. We demand that Governor Nwifuru immediately order the unconditional release of the President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council,” APGA added.
