Troops of the Nigerian Army stationed in Damasak town, Borno State, successfully repelled a late-night assault launched by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The attempted attack, which occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, was confirmed by counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday morning.
According to Makama, a security source disclosed that the insurgents, who were in large numbers and heavily armed, stormed the town under the cover of darkness but met stiff resistance from the military personnel deployed in the area.
“The attackers, reportedly in large numbers and heavily armed, were met with fierce resistance from the troops on ground,” Makama wrote. “Initial field reports indicate that the soldiers engaged the terrorists in a prolonged firefight, effectively thwarting the attack and forcing the insurgents to retreat with casualties.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military has not released an official statement or provided a casualty figure from the confrontation.
Damasak, located in the northern part of Borno State, has been a frequent target of insurgent attacks due to its strategic location near the Nigerian-Niger border.
