Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), describing the action as utterly reprehensible and a threat to democracy.
Reacting to the development in a statement on his Facebook page on Monday, Atiku demanded a full and thorough investigation into the incident, which he said undermines the sanctity of democratic institutions.
“The viral video of armed security operatives invading the Lagos State House of Assembly is utterly reprehensible and stands condemned. It must be subjected to a full and thorough investigation,” he said.
According to the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the involvement of security operatives in what appeared to be an attempt to enforce a leadership change in the House is deeply troubling.
“It is bewildering that the invading operatives reportedly have a mandate to enforce a leadership change in the House. It is appalling that those who claimed to have fought for democracy are now sanctioning this blatant desecration of a state’s foremost legislative body, thereby putting our hard-earned democracy in jeopardy,” Atiku added.
The ex-Vice President noted that leadership crises in legislative houses are not unusual in democratic systems but insisted that using security forces to intervene in such matters is unacceptable.
“The purported invitation of armed security operatives for a conflict resolution in a parliament is an anathema that should be frowned upon and interrogated with all sense of urgency,” he stated.
Atiku also took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, urging him to focus on addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges rather than interfering in state matters.
“Tinubu should focus on bringing Nigeria out of the mess he plunged the country into rather than interfering in state affairs,” he said.
His reaction comes after DSS and police operatives reportedly took over the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday following a leadership crisis within the House.
