Former Vice President and ex-Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of corruption and a history of abusing women.
Atiku made these remarks while reacting to sexual harassment allegations against Akpabio and the National Assembly’s approval of President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration in Rivers State.
In an interview with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie of Untold Stories, Atiku stated:
“Not only is he corrupt, but he is also in the habit of abusing women. I was not surprised that the state of emergency passed in the National Assembly because I know that the leadership is corrupt, and I have no apologies for saying that. They could do anything. The Senate President has been known for such behavior even when he was a governor.”
The accusations come amid fresh allegations from Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who claims Akpabio sexually harassed her. According to Natasha, the Senate President victimized her and withheld certain privileges after she rejected his advances.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the escalating political crisis between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. The conflict intensified within the state House of Assembly, despite a Supreme Court ruling.
As tensions persisted, Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule allegedly blocked Fubara from presenting the 2025 budget. The situation ultimately led Tinubu to suspend Fubara for six months, appoint a sole administrator, and impose emergency rule—actions later approved by the National Assembly.
