Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned the Federal Government against mismanaging the $1.07 billion allocated to the health sector in the 2025 budget. He emphasized that previous reports of missing public funds, allegedly swallowed by animals, must not repeat themselves in such a critical sector.
In a statement on Sunday, Atiku urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to ensure full transparency and accountability in the allocation and disbursement of the health intervention fund.
“In recent years, we have heard bizarre claims of public funds disappearing under inexplicable circumstances. These incidents were neither thoroughly investigated nor properly sanctioned,” he said.
The former Vice President stressed the urgent need for strict oversight, particularly in light of dwindling resources and reduced external support for healthcare services.
“To prevent mismanagement, the government must establish clear mechanisms for public audits and accountability regarding the $1.07 billion health budget,” he added.
Atiku also criticized the lack of a concrete framework detailing how the funds will be utilized, arguing that Nigerians deserve full disclosure.
“We have seen reports that the Federal Government plans to allocate $1.07 billion to the primary health sector, alongside the N2.48 trillion initially proposed for health in the budget draft. However, there is no clear policy framework explaining how these funds will be disbursed,” he stated.
He called on the government to provide a transparent breakdown of the budget, ensuring that every kobo is used effectively to improve Nigeria’s healthcare system.
