Security analyst Mubarak Umar has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action against banditry in the North-West, stressing that no individual, regardless of status, should be spared if the administration truly seeks to end the crisis in 2025.
Speaking to journalists in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, Umar revealed that evidence has repeatedly shown that several influential figures are complicit in banditry-related activities.
He cited the dethronement of three Emirs and several District Heads over alleged ties to banditry. “The former Governor of the state and current Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, had established a high-powered committee on banditry, led by former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar,” Umar said.
“The committee recommended the removal of five Emirs and 35 District Heads for their involvement, but the state government failed to act on the recommendations.”
Umar also referenced a late member of the State House of Assembly who was arrested over suspected links to banditry but was later released without charge before he died in his sleep.
He warned that banditry continues to cripple rural life in Zamfara, preventing farmers from accessing their lands and contributing to severe food insecurity. “Hundreds of women have been widowed, and thousands of children now roam the streets, begging for survival,” he lamented.
Umar urged President Tinubu to prioritize the protection of lives and property, emphasizing that no government can afford to treat security with indifference.
