The #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) movement has called on the Federal Government to release the findings of the Brigadier General Mohammed Sabo-led Fact-Finding Committee on the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.
In a statement on Sunday, signed by its spokesperson, Jeff Okoroafor, the group condemned successive administrations for keeping the report classified despite multiple Freedom of Information (FoI) requests for its disclosure.
The Sabo Committee was set up on May 6, 2014, by then-President Goodluck Jonathan following global outrage over the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram terrorists on April 14, 2014. The committee submitted its report on June 20, 2014, confirming the mass abduction and revealing that while 57 girls escaped, 219 remained missing at the time.
Over a decade later, BBOG reports that 141 of the abducted girls have been rescued or freed, with many returning to school. However, 78 girls remain unaccounted for, raising concerns that they may have been forcibly assimilated into terrorist strongholds.
“The Bola Tinubu administration has a duty to provide an update on efforts to rescue the remaining Chibok girls,” the statement read.
BBOG also criticized the government’s continued secrecy regarding the Sabo Committee Report. “We reiterate the importance of closure for the families of the 78 missing schoolchildren. The Tinubu administration, like its predecessors, has failed to release the report despite our formal requests, including through the FoI process,” the group stated.
The demand for transparency comes amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly in the northeast, where insurgents continue to carry out mass abductions and attacks on schools.
The BBOG movement insists that publishing the report would provide critical insights into the circumstances of the abduction, the government’s response, and long-overdue answers for the victims’ families.
