Following a wave of deadly attacks that have devastated several communities in Benue State, the Nigerian Army has pledged decisive action against the perpetrators.
The Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), Major General Moses Gara, on Saturday, June 14, 2025, visited the hardest-hit areas, including Yelwata Village, Tse-Mtwenem, Daudu, and Iye Village, to assess the situation firsthand and reassure residents.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer of OPWS Headquarters, the visit was described as part of a wider military response aimed at restoring peace and stability to the region.
During his engagement with traditional rulers, local leaders, and residents, General Gara condemned the attacks as “barbaric and unacceptable,” and vowed that the military would relentlessly pursue those responsible.
“Today, I stand before you not just as a commander, but as a fellow Nigerian who feels your pain. We are not here to watch; we are here to act. We will go after the attackers and ensure justice is served,” he declared.
The commander offered condolences to the bereaved families and commended the resilience and commitment of troops operating under difficult conditions to protect lives.
He also revealed that OPWS had intensified intelligence operations and increased troop deployment to identified hotspots. However, he emphasized that community cooperation remains essential in defeating criminal elements.
“No security operation can succeed without local support. We urge residents to share credible and timely information that will help us prevent future attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.
Responding on behalf of the affected communities, Mr. Iorkyaa Emmanuel expressed gratitude for the army’s presence and described General Gara’s visit as a beacon of hope for villages long gripped by fear.
He assured the military of the community’s full cooperation and called for a sustained security presence, especially in remote and vulnerable areas.
