ONITSHA — Public affairs analyst and legal practitioner, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exercise his constitutional powers by declaring a state of emergency in Benue State, in response to the recurring massacre of civilians.
In a statement titled “Call for Constitutional Intervention in Benue State Amidst Ongoing Security Crisis,” Ejiofor argued that the scale and persistence of the killings justify invoking Section 305(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the President to act where public safety and order are under threat.
“The Constitution is clear — when there is a breakdown of law and order or imminent danger to lives and property, the President has a duty to intervene,” Ejiofor said. “The sustained attacks, allegedly by foreign militias crossing through the Cameroon border, as confirmed by the Benue State Government, clearly meet this threshold.”
Ejiofor also took aim at Governor Hyacinth Alia, accusing him of shielding perpetrators and minimizing the crisis. “This is not a time for political appeasement or partisan maneuvering,” he said. “Leadership in crisis demands constitutional courage and decisive action — not excuses or silence. If political office has become too burdensome, perhaps a return to the pulpit would better serve his conscience and calling.”
He stressed that the lives of Benue residents must not be reduced to political currency, urging the Federal Government to deploy security forces for full-scale operations against the armed groups terrorizing communities such as Yelwata.
Ejiofor warned that the nation’s response to the Benue killings would be a defining moment for its leaders. “This is a test of our national conscience. These atrocities must not be normalized or ignored,” he said. “History will not forget — nor forgive — those who stood by in silence. Let justice speak, not as a whisper, but as a national roar. Every drop of innocent blood demands justice.”
