The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has called on the Federal Government to immediately enforce the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017, stressing that there is no available land in the state for grazing reserves or settlements.
In a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, the party condemned the continued attacks on Benue communities, describing them as a major threat to peace, livelihoods, and human dignity. The PDP reaffirmed its firm support for the anti-open grazing law, describing it as the only practical and locally-driven solution to the killings and displacements in the state.
“This law is the outcome of wide consultation and embodies the collective will of Benue people. It is not just a law—it is our lifeline and our defence,” the statement said.
The party cautioned the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu against any attempt to allocate land in the state for grazing reserves or settlements, saying such moves would violate the rights and ancestral heritage of the people.
“There is no vacant land in Benue for any external interest. Our land is ancestral, sacred, and not for sale. Any attempt to seize it under any guise will be fiercely resisted,” it warned.
The PDP also urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to uphold the law and resist any pressure to weaken or repeal it, noting that any such move would be seen as a betrayal of the people’s trust.
“Our people are dying, villages are being destroyed, and farms are abandoned. This is not the time for talk. What we need now is decisive action,” the statement concluded.
