The Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Risku Muhammed, has raised concerns over rising criminal activities in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA), alleging that 20 cows were poisoned and 200 rustled in separate incidents.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Muhammed claimed that a farmer, identified as Bawa Oneh, allegedly laced rice chaff with poison and invited a herder to graze his cattle on it in Ucha village. According to him, 13 cows died instantly, while seven others are receiving veterinary care.
He also reported that 200 cows were stolen last Thursday, but security operatives intervened, arresting one suspect while others fled. A total of 186 cows were recovered.
Muhammed commended Agatu LGA Chairman, Melvin James, for his efforts in maintaining peace and compensating herders for losses caused by criminal activities. He noted that herders in Olegodege, Utigologwu, Egwuma, Akele, and Okwtanobe have suffered repeated attacks and cattle theft.
Confirming the incidents, James stated that investigations are ongoing and that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the poisoning. He assured that the council remains committed to preserving peace in Agatu, despite efforts by criminal elements to disrupt stability.
Benue State Police Command spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Catherine Anene, also confirmed the arrest, adding that investigations are ongoing. She reiterated the commitment of security agencies and the local peace committee to maintaining order in the region.
