Former spokesperson for the Labour Party, Kenneth Okonkwo, has blamed the ongoing killings in Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the country on the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking in an interview with News Central TV, the Nollywood veteran criticized the federal government’s handling of security issues, accusing Tinubu of failing to protect Nigerians.
“There is no way anybody will be praising this government and not appear like a fool,” Okonkwo said. “When they came in, Tinubu declared the removal of fuel subsidy during his inauguration—even though there was no cabinet in place at the time. Fuel prices skyrocketed from N195 to N617 instantly. Then the naira was floated and crashed. The only response from the government has been to ask Nigerians to be patient.”
He added that Nigerians have continued to suffer while waiting for improvements that have yet to come.
“People are hungry, frustrated, and dying. You can’t be praising this administration while people are being massacred. As I speak, people are dying in Benue, not because they committed any crimes, but because Tinubu is their President—and he has failed to defend them.”
Okonkwo noted that Benue is governed by a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a Reverend Father, and yet the state remains plagued by violence.
“Politically, they belong to Tinubu’s party. Spiritually, a Reverend Father is in charge. Still, the people are dying every day at the hands of terrorists and killer herdsmen—with no end or solution in sight.”
He also cited ongoing violence in Plateau, the Northwest, and Southwest, alleging that kidnappers have been found with mass graves where victims were burned alive.
“Security reports that could prevent these attacks aren’t taken seriously. Yet security is the most basic responsibility of any government—and this administration has failed woefully,” he said.
