Reno Omokri has accused former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of financial recklessness and conflict of interest during his time in office, citing alleged banking dealings and governance decisions as evidence.
In a lengthy statement addressed to Peter Obi via X, Omokri reacted to Obi’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to write off the debt of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. Omokri argued that while the decision was within the president’s constitutional powers, Obi himself should answer questions about his own record as governor.
According to Omokri, Peter Obi did not construct any new nursery, primary or secondary schools, universities, or standalone hospitals during his tenure as Anambra State governor. He alleged that this was because state funds were deposited in a commercial bank in which Obi reportedly had substantial shareholding and had previously served as chairman.
Omokri claimed that over 45 million dollars equivalent in Anambra State funds were lodged in the bank, allegedly to generate interest income that benefited the institution and its shareholders. He further alleged that Obi was among the major beneficiaries of this arrangement due to his ownership interests.
He also referenced poverty statistics, stating that Anambra State’s poverty rate allegedly increased from 41.4 percent in 2003 before Obi assumed office to 53.7 percent by 2009 during his administration. Omokri argued that this increase was evidence of poor governance and misplaced priorities.
In his statement, Omokri alleged that several communities in Anambra lacked access to schools and healthcare facilities while state funds were allegedly tied down in bank deposits. He further claimed that similar funds, if invested elsewhere, could have generated significant annual returns.
Omokri concluded by daring Peter Obi to seek legal redress if the allegations were untrue. He also referenced the Pandora Papers investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, claiming that Obi was mentioned in connection with offshore financial dealings.
The allegations have continued to generate debate online, with supporters and critics of Peter Obi sharply divided over the claims.
