The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has slammed former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, over his recent remarks on the Nigerian Civil War, likening his legacy to that of Adolf Hitler.
In a statement released Monday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB described Gowon’s claim that the war was fought “for unity, not hatred” as a “grotesque distortion of history” and an insult to the memory of Biafran victims.
“Gowon will never be remembered for unity but for unparalleled brutality. His attempt to whitewash the Biafran genocide is provocative, insensitive, and shameless,” the statement read.
IPOB accused Gowon of overseeing the massacre of over five million Biafrans—men, women, and children—during the 1967–1970 war, stating that his recent comments reopen deep wounds.
“His legacy is one of bloodshed, second only to Adolf Hitler’s slaughter of six million Jews,” the group stated.
The pro-Biafra movement posed several long-standing questions to Gowon, challenging his silence over the Aburi Accord, which they believe could have prevented the war. They also questioned his handling of Nigeria’s regional structure, the portrayal of the 1966 coup as an Igbo conspiracy, and his refusal to publicly share his account of the events leading to the conflict.
“As a self-proclaimed born-again Christian, why have you never told the truth about the Aburi Accord?” IPOB asked. “What do you fear history will uncover?”
The group accused Gowon of failing to acknowledge the horrors of starvation policies, mass killings, and aerial bombardments of civilians during the war.
“Unity cannot be enforced through violence, nor can it exist in a nation built on exploitation and marginalization. Nigeria remains an artificial construct imposed by colonial powers,” the statement continued.
IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to the Biafran cause, calling on Biafrans at home and abroad to reject Gowon’s “revisionist narrative” and intensify efforts toward self-determination.
“The time for truth, justice, and liberation is now. The blood of five million Biafrans cries out for justice. If Gowon seeks peace, let him begin with truth—not empty rhetoric.”
