Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has asserted that Kanu should be regarded as a prisoner of war, not a criminal.
Ejimakor made the statement while referencing a controversial comment made by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who in 2021 warned that he would address the actions of certain individuals “in a language they understand.” The remark was widely perceived as a veiled threat against the Igbo people, sparking backlash.
At the time, Buhari had tweeted: “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
The tweet was subsequently deleted by Twitter (now X), after which the Nigerian government suspended the platform, accusing it of enabling content that threatened the country’s unity.
During an interview on Arise TV, Buhari stood by his comments, saying, “Yes, I said it, and we will do it,” emphasizing that the message was directed at “all criminals in Nigeria,” including members of IPOB.
Ejimakor, however, argued that the former president’s statement marked the beginning of a second war on the Igbo people. He suggested that this mindset led to Kanu’s rearrest and ongoing prosecution.
Writing on X, the legal counsel said: “When Buhari threatened to teach Ndigbo the ‘language’ they understand, it was a declaration of a second war on Ndigbo. The crowning glory was the ‘capture’ of MAZI NNAMDI KANU, seen by Buhari as the ‘numero uno’ of Igbo leadership. Thus, #MNK is a prisoner of war, not a felon.”
Ejimakor’s remarks are the latest in ongoing debates surrounding the legality and fairness of Kanu’s detention, and the broader implications of the Nigerian government’s stance on IPOB and the Biafra agitation.
