Security operatives escorting the convoy of Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, successfully intercepted a Boko Haram attack along the Damaturu–Biu highway in Yobe State, rescuing abducted travelers and recovering weapons left behind by the insurgents.
The attack occurred near Gujba town at approximately 4:48 p.m. on Monday as the convoy was returning from Biu, where the governor had earlier commissioned projects in Biu and Hawul Local Government Areas. Governor Zulum had departed from the convoy earlier for an urgent engagement in Maiduguri, leaving senior government officials to lead the return trip.
Eyewitnesses reported that the insurgents had set up a roadblock, seizing vehicles and forcing passengers to lie face down before security forces arrived. One of the rescued victims, Malum Ari, recounted the terrifying moments when the militants took his car keys and held the passengers hostage.
“They collected the keys and ordered everyone to lie on the ground. Fortunately, the convoy arrived, and the security personnel opened fire, forcing them to retreat,” Ari said.
Describing the attackers as over 20 heavily armed men, he noted that some fled in panic at the sight of the security operatives. One militant reportedly fell twice before escaping on a motorcycle.
A passenger expressed frustration over the persistent attacks along the route.
“They always block the road in broad daylight,” he lamented.
This incident comes just days after Boko Haram militants raided Gujba town, killing a 32-year-old vigilante, Modu Bulama, and setting fire to homes and shops.
