The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Aondona Dajoh, has ordered the immediate release of youths arrested during recent protests across the state.
The directive was issued on Tuesday during an emergency plenary session convened in response to widespread public outrage over the detention of demonstrators protesting the state’s worsening insecurity.
Addressing lawmakers during the session, Speaker Dajoh emphasized the legislature’s commitment to upholding democratic values and the constitutional rights of all citizens.
“Peaceful protest is a constitutional right,” Dajoh stated. “No citizen should be punished for raising their voice in a democratic society.”
His declaration was met with applause from members of the Assembly and welcomed by civil society groups, who described the move as a courageous stand for civil liberties.
The Speaker also urged security agencies to act with professionalism and respect for human rights in future dealings with protesters. He announced that the Assembly would investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrests and engage relevant authorities to prevent similar incidents going forward.
