The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Comrade Usman Okai Austin, a former House of Representatives member for the Dekina/Bassa federal constituency.
Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore disclosed the arrest on Wednesday, alleging that DSS operatives stormed Okai’s residence in a gestapo-style operation.
In a post on X, Sowore claimed Okai was targeted for criticizing Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo.
“Imagine how these lawless @OfficialDSSNG mercenaries are abducting, torturing, and dehumanizing a Nigerian citizen, @Austinokai, just because he expresses himself against illegitimate Gov. Ododo of Kogi State. #RevolutionNow #FreeAustinOkaiNow,” Sowore wrote.
He further called for Okai’s immediate release, accusing the DSS of acting as a tool for political oppression.
Okai has been an outspoken critic of Ododo’s administration. Recently, he urged the governor to check the “unchecked and excessive powers” of the state’s Accountant General, Habiba Onumoko. He accused Onumoko of financial mismanagement and overstepping her constitutional role, alleging that a cabal had taken control of Ododo’s government.
The DSS has yet to release an official statement on Okai’s arrest.
