Canada’s counter-tariffs on U.S. products took effect on Thursday in response to the 25% tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump on steel and aluminum imports.
Starting at midnight (0400 GMT), Canada levied tariffs on approximately 29 billion Canadian dollars (20 billion U.S. dollars) worth of American imports, including steel, aluminum, computers, and sports equipment.
Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney criticized the U.S. tariffs as unjustified and harmful to Canadian workers.
“We’re rightly retaliating, and every dollar from our tariffs will support our workers,” Carney posted on X.
Carney, who was elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party on Sunday, is set to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau temporarily. He is scheduled to be sworn in on Friday.
Trump defended the U.S. tariffs, arguing that excessive steel and aluminum imports posed a threat to national security.
