The high-profile trial of former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and seven others over alleged misappropriation of public funds suffered a fresh setback on Wednesday as a State High Court adjourned proceedings until October 14, 2026.
Ganduje, who is facing an 11-count charge bordering on bribery, criminal conspiracy, misappropriation, and diversion of billions of naira, is being tried alongside his wife, Hafsat Umar, and several other individuals and companies: Abubakar Bawuro, Abdullahi Umar, Jibrilla Muhammad, Lamash Properties Ltd, Safari Textiles Ltd, and Lasage General Enterprises Ltd.
At Wednesday’s hearing, which was slated for arguments on all pending applications, prosecuting counsel Mr. Victor Oni informed the court that the state was ready to proceed. He sought and obtained leave to withdraw an earlier motion dated March 31, 2026, and substitute it with a fresh motion on notice dated May 15, 2026, along with a counter-affidavit and written address responding to the sixth defendant’s preliminary objection and application for stay of proceedings.
Defence counsel for Ganduje, his wife, and son, Mrs. Lydia Oluwakemi-Oyewo, raised no objection to the substitution. Counsel for the third, fifth, and eighth defendants similarly indicated readiness to proceed.
However, counsel to the sixth defendant, Mr. Abubakar Ahmad, drew the court’s attention to his filed preliminary objection, counter-affidavit, and written address, and requested a date for its hearing.
Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu subsequently struck out the prosecution’s earlier motion and adjourned the matter to October 14, 2026, for hearing of the sixth defendant’s preliminary objection.
