The Enugu State High Court has issued an order preventing the Mburubu Town Union from organizing, supervising, or assisting in any election for the Traditional Igweship Stool of Mburubu community in Nkanu East Local Government Area, Enugu State.
Delivering the ruling on Wednesday, Justice R. O. Odugu granted an interim injunction restraining the respondents, their agents, or any representatives from proceeding with the election until the motion on notice is determined.
The court order followed an ex-parte motion filed by Chief Edwin Onwuka, Secretary of the Mburubu Igwe’s Cabinet, and Chief Sylvanus Njoku on behalf of the cabinet. They sought to prevent the Mburubu Town Union, the sixth respondent in the suit, from conducting the election.
The suit, marked E/162M/2025, names the Attorney-General of Enugu State, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Emmanuel Edeh, Mr. Nwosu John, Mr. Ogbonna Igbudu, and Mr. Nwankwo Samuel as representatives of the Mburubu Town Union (MTU) , as respondents. The union had initially scheduled the election for Friday, February 28, 2025.
Representing the applicants, counsel Nnamdi B. Aneke, Esq. argued that the election should not proceed due to unresolved issues concerning the selection process and the community’s constitution.
The motion, supported by an affidavit from Chief Ezekwe Onwuka of Uhuagu Village, Mburubu, was granted by Justice Odugu, who adjourned the case to March 6, 2025, for further hearing.
