The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, Theresa Ushie, for a period of three months over allegations bordering on misconduct and corruption.
The suspension followed a resolution passed by the Bekwarra Legislative Council on Tuesday and was subsequently adopted by the state assembly.
In response to the allegations, the Assembly also constituted an investigative committee to probe the claims leveled against the chairman.
It will be recalled that this is not the first time Ushie has faced backlash from her councilors, who three months ago initiated an impeachment process citing corruption, misconduct, and abuse of office.
During deliberations on the matter, Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, stated that the suspension was in line with Section 14(3) of the Cross River Local Government Laws, 2025.
Ayambem further announced that the Vice Chairman, Mr. Egbung Odama, will assume leadership of the council in an acting capacity during the suspension period.
He also urged the committee to ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
