Segun Sowunmi, a close associate of former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has cautioned the Federal Government against declaring a state of emergency in Osun State.
His remarks come amid calls by the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to take such action due to the ongoing local government crisis in the state.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television program, Sowunmi dismissed the proposal as baseless, drawing comparisons to past situations in Borno State under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“There were rumors that some people are deceiving themselves with talk of declaring a state of emergency in Osun. For what and why? (Ex-President Goodluck) Jonathan did not declare a state of emergency when the Vice President (Kashim Shettima) was governor in Borno, even with all the shenanigans of Chibok and everything that happened,” Sowunmi said.
He further warned the APC against attempting to suppress opposition voices and turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
A state of emergency, as defined by Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, allows the government to temporarily suspend normal constitutional procedures in response to a national crisis. However, Sowunmi argued that the current situation in Osun does not warrant such drastic measures.
