Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that he will never back Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma’s bid to become Senate President in 2027, accusing the governor of pursuing personal ambitions at the expense of party unity.
Speaking on TVC News’ Journalists’ Hangout on Monday, Wike said politicians denied APC tickets in their states had found alternative platforms to contest the 2027 elections, including under his political structure in the PDP. He argued that if those candidates win, they would have no obligation to support Uzodinma’s Senate presidency ambition.
“Of course, life or death, I will never support Hope Uzodinma to become the Senate President of Nigeria. Everybody knows that. Nobody should ask me questions about it, it is not personal,” Wike stated.
The comments come amid a growing rift between Wike and APC governors over the Rainbow Coalition, a cross-party arrangement the FCT minister is promoting ahead of the next general elections. Uzodinma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, has been a leading critic of the coalition.
Wike accused the Imo governor of creating internal problems he cannot resolve and resorting to blackmail. He also questioned Uzodinma’s path to power, noting that he became governor after finishing fourth in the election.
According to Wike, Uzodinma’s second term is ending and he is positioning himself to run for the Senate with the goal of becoming Senate President. He claimed the governor has urged fellow state chief executives to control the production of senators and House of Representatives members so he can later secure their support.
“Some of the governors are not experienced. So they buy it, thinking that he is trying to make them powerful. Not knowing that he has his own interest and agenda to become Senate President,” Wike said.
Wike has insisted the Rainbow Coalition is primarily aimed at mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election and is not an APC structure. He has maintained that the PDP remains free to field candidates for governorship, National Assembly and state Assembly elections. APC governors, through the Progressive Governors Forum, have warned they will not support any arrangement that weakens the party or its candidates.
The confrontation has sharpened as the coalition expands across Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River states, drawing politicians who have fallen out with APC structures.
