A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has called on President Bola Tinubu to deploy drones, biometric systems, and other modern surveillance tools to tighten security along Nigeria’s porous borders.
In a letter addressed to the President, Mumuni highlighted the growing threat of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and illegal migration, stressing that many of these issues stem from the lack of effective border control.
The letter, made public on Thursday through a statement signed by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, emphasized the need for urgent and strategic action to strengthen national security.
“Our borders are the first line of defense against terrorism and cross-border crimes. Their current state poses serious national security threats,” Mumuni stated. “Insurgents and criminal elements exploit these porous borders to infiltrate the country, and this must stop.”
He urged the Federal Government to conduct a comprehensive audit of existing border security infrastructure and provide relevant agencies with the tools and training needed for effective operations.
“Modern surveillance tools—such as drones and biometric systems—can play a key role in tracking movement patterns, identifying threats, and shutting down illegal trade routes used for smuggling arms, drugs, and other contraband,” he added.
Mumuni also pointed out the economic benefits of secure borders, noting that improved security would boost legitimate trade and strengthen public confidence in government.
“Securing our borders is not only a defense strategy but also a step towards economic stability. Safe and controlled borders promote lawful commerce and restore safety in communities affected by insecurity,” he said.
He further urged the government to prioritize joint military and police operations along critical border points, ensure proper training of security personnel, and increase their presence in vulnerable areas.
