As Christians prepare to celebrate Easter, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius Kaigama, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take urgent and decisive action against the rising wave of insecurity across Nigeria.
Kaigama made the appeal on Tuesday during the Chrism Mass held at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral, Area 3, Garki, Abuja.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the event, the Archbishop expressed deep concern over the worsening state of insecurity, especially the recent killings in Plateau State and other parts of the country. He described the situation as a “monster” that has evolved and spread with alarming speed.
“There was a time when the problem was just Boko Haram. Later, we were dealing with militancy. Now it’s herdsmen, kidnappers, bandits. Criminality has developed branches. It’s a monster spreading in all directions,” he said.
Kaigama emphasized the need for a total overhaul of the security strategy and stressed that all security agencies must work together without rivalry or competition. “There should be inter-agency cooperation. These criminals are not ghosts. The security forces must go all out to get them,” he urged.
He also called for transparency and accountability in the use of funds allocated for security operations, insisting that such resources must be used effectively and honestly.
“When the Catholic Bishops met with President Tinubu, we appealed to him to rise to the occasion and ensure that things are done properly. We are hoping new and effective steps will be taken,” Kaigama added.
