Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have engaged in a war of words over the recent flooding that affected parts of Benin City and surrounding areas.
A heavy downpour on Tuesday caused severe flooding across the state, submerging houses and rendering major roads impassable for hours.
Reacting to the incident, Governor Okpebholo, through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, questioned the whereabouts of the $150 million allegedly spent by former Governor Godwin Obaseki on flood control projects during his tenure. The governor described the flooding as evidence of failed investments in critical infrastructure under the previous administration.
In a swift response, the PDP criticized the governor and his All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration, accusing them of failing to take responsibility nearly one year after assuming office.
Edo PDP Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, described Okpebholo’s comments as an attempt to deflect blame, alleging that the administration has left the state “ungoverned” and unprepared for the annual rainy season.
Nehikhare added that the governor’s focus on past administrations was a cover for the APC’s “ineptitude,” dismissing claims of mismanagement under Obaseki as a “phantom excuse” for the current government’s failure to address the recurring flooding problem.
