The Chief of Staff to the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Edison Ehie, has alleged that he was offered a ₦5 billion bribe to back the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara during his tenure as Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Speaking on Channels Television on Sunday, Ehie claimed to have evidence of the offer saved on his phone.
“In early October 2023, I was approached with a bribe of ₦5 billion for impeachment. I have the proof on my phone. I have also printed and distributed copies in case they try to harm me. I already have a son and a brother,” he stated.
The allegations come amid a prolonged political crisis in the state. On October 29, 2023, an explosion rocked the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, exposing deep divisions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Following the incident, Speaker Martin Amaewhule and 26 pro-Wike lawmakers suspended Ehie and three others loyal to Fubara, accusing them of orchestrating the explosion. They subsequently initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor, citing abuse of power and gross misconduct.
However, the impeachment attempt was halted after Fubara’s supporters intervened.
