Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fully automate the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the Results Viewing Portal (IREV) to enhance public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Speaking at the YIAGA Africa reflection conference on democratic elections in West Africa on Tuesday in Abuja, Jonathan stated that the controversies surrounding the 2023 presidential election, particularly the malfunctioning of IREV, could have been avoided if the system had been properly automated to minimize human interference.
“The issue of controversy about BVAS and IREV, for example “if BVAS captures data, that data should be automatically uploaded to IREV, Jonathan said. “It should not depend on an interface by a human factor who will then tell us about glitches. If it is fully automated, with no human interference, the process will be seamless. But if a human has to direct BVAS before it performs its automated function, then manipulation becomes possible.”
The former president acknowledged that while technology alone has not resolved all issues in Nigeria’s electoral system, it remains essential and must be improved to strengthen the integrity of elections.
BVAS and IREV were introduced by INEC to facilitate voter accreditation and electronic transmission of results, but their implementation faced challenges in the 2023 polls.
