Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing it as the end of an era marked by humility, moral courage, and dedicated service to humanity.
Pope Francis reportedly passed away at exactly 7:35 a.m. on Easter Monday at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican.
In a tribute posted on his official X handle, Atiku hailed the late pontiff as a transformative figure and a voice for the marginalized.
“It is with a heart heavy with sorrow that I extend my deepest condolences to the Holy See, the Catholic Church in Nigeria and around the world, and the entire Christian faithful on the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis,” he wrote.
Atiku described the late pope as a “trailblazer who dared to walk where no one has gone,” praising his legacy of compassion and unity.
“Pope Francis was a Pontiff who walked among the people, whose voice echoed the cries of the poor and whose hands reached toward those cast aside by the world. His papacy was a bridge of compassion in a time of division, a balm of grace in a wounded world,” he added.
Reflecting on the timing of his death, Atiku called it a “solemn and divine punctuation,” noting that his passing on such a sacred Christian day underscores the significance of a life lived in service to others.
“To Catholics in Nigeria and beyond, and to the Christian community worldwide, I share in your sorrow and stand with you in prayer,” he said.
“May the memory of Pope Francis continue to inspire us toward unity, compassion, and peace. And may his soul, now freed from the burdens of this world, find eternal rest in the presence of the Almighty.”
