The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has called for an immediate end to attacks on residents of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area in Enugu State.
The group, in a statement on Friday, urged security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the recent violence and ensure justice for the victims.
Their demand follows a protest by women in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo, decrying escalating attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen, including reported cases of rape. The chairman of the local government confirmed that a woman was raped but claimed the protest was politically motivated.
Reacting to the development, the National President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, condemned the continued insecurity in the area. He lamented that for over a decade, the people of Isi-Uzo had suffered unrelenting attacks despite repeated assurances from security agencies.
“We are deeply concerned about the inability of security agencies to stop these relentless attacks. This crisis has persisted for over ten years, yet it remains unresolved. It is now being politicized, which is unacceptable,” Okwu stated.
He emphasized the need for urgent action, particularly regarding the reported case of rape.
“It is confirmed that a woman was raped by these criminals operating as herdsmen. We understand the trauma that comes with such an ordeal, and we demand that the perpetrators be arrested and prosecuted. This is not the time for politics but for justice,” he added.
The group urged the government to prioritize the safety of Isi-Uzo residents and take decisive steps to end the violence rather than allow political distractions to overshadow the real issue.
