The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to implement major reforms in the territory’s transportation sector aimed at enhancing safety, organization, and commuter comfort.
Wike made this known on Friday in Abuja after inspecting the completed Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals, which are set for commissioning as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office. He also inspected the completed access road to Giri District, which is ready for inauguration.
According to the minister, a committee has already been set up to work on the transport sector reforms, which will be finalized before the official opening of the terminals.
“Obviously, a lot of changes will take place in the FCT transport sector,” Wike said. “These reforms are essential, especially from a security perspective. We need to identify those operating in the taxi business and implement a standardized colour scheme, so that in the event of any incident, the vehicles and drivers can be easily traced.”
He assured residents that the FCT Administration is doing everything possible to strengthen the transportation system, including removing unregulated motor parks from the roads.
Speaking on the completed projects, Wike expressed satisfaction with the quality of work at the terminals and the Giri access road. However, he noted that a few areas still require corrections, which he has pointed out.
The minister praised the efforts of the contractors, especially local ones, and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting indigenous firms to deliver quality projects for the benefit of Nigerians.
The Kugbo, Mabushi, and Central Area Bus and Taxi Terminals are part of the FCT Administration’s efforts to modernize the city’s transport infrastructure. While the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals are ready for use, the one in the Central Area is still under construction.
Wike also revealed that two additional terminals are in the pipeline—one in Bwari and another in Gwagwalada—to further boost transportation efficiency across the territory.
