The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the declaration in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani. He congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion.
Tunji-Ojo described Nigeria as “unarguably the most prosperous black nation in the world,” citing its people, land and welcoming spirit. He called the country a beacon of hope for President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Peace and stability, the minister said, remain essential for national development. He urged citizens to follow the example of the nation’s founding fathers, strengthen their love for the country and work toward a Nigeria that future generations can take pride in.
“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He assured Nigerians that the administration would pursue a better future for all citizens as a tribute to past heroes. Citizens, he added, should use the anniversary to demonstrate unity, patriotism, peaceful co-existence and mutual respect.
A new Nigeria is achievable, the minister said, adding that the government remains committed to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating conditions in which people can live, work and pursue their aspirations with confidence.
