The Federal Government has detailed how poor and vulnerable Nigerian households will be chosen for a ₦50,000 cash grant and the steps selected beneficiaries must follow to receive the money under the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI).
The programme, run by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, aims to help households manage rising living costs through direct transfers into mobile wallets. Payments will be made via designated providers: ALAT, MoMo, NairaGram, OPay and Moniepoint.
Beneficiaries are drawn from the National Social Register and verified national identity records. The government said individuals cannot apply or pay to join the list, and not everyone will be included in the first round of payments. Phone numbers linked to those records are shared only with the relevant payment provider for disbursement purposes, with personal data restricted to programme use.
Selected households will receive an SMS from one of the five providers notifying them of inclusion. They must reply YES to confirm participation; no payment will be released without consent. A mobile wallet is then opened and linked to the beneficiary’s phone number and National Identification Number. The full ₦50,000 is credited to the wallet without deductions. Recipients can withdraw the funds at a POS agent or bank, or spend directly from the wallet.
After the credit, providers will send further SMS instructions. Official withdrawal codes listed by the government are: ALAT (Wema Bank) *94523#; MoMo PSB *6710#; NairaGram *72600#; OPay *95520# or the mobile app; and Moniepoint *557327# or the mobile app.
The government stressed that the payment is a grant, not a loan, and requires no repayment. It also warned against fraudsters seeking money or personal banking details to “facilitate” the grant. Genuine messages will come only from the five named providers, ask only for a YES reply or a designated USSD code, and will never request payment, a PIN, an OTP or a clickable link. Beneficiaries were advised not to share PINs, OTPs or passwords with anyone, including agents or officials, and to ignore unauthorised messages while contacting the programme helpline if uncertain.
The intervention uses mobile wallets and independent checks during each payment cycle to speed delivery and improve transparency.
