A fire outbreak has gutted sections of the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, Nigeria.
The inferno, which reportedly started around 6:20 a.m. in one of the buildings, quickly spread to a nearby structure. As of the time of this report, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
Eyewitnesses, including residents and traders, were seen alongside firefighters attempting to salvage goods and property from the affected area.
Confirming the incident, Chukwudi Chiketa, Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, stated that emergency responders were actively working to contain the fire.
“Anambra State Fire Service is currently intervening at the scene of the fire outbreak at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha. The distress call came in at 6:20 a.m., and our firefighters responded immediately,” he said.
Chiketa reassured the public that efforts were underway to bring the situation under control while urging residents to remain calm.
