Five members of one family died when a concrete overhead water reservoir collapsed onto their bungalow in Enugu State, prompting police to detain the owner of the neighbouring building.
The incident occurred at about 5:45 a.m. on September 18 in Umuike-Aja Village, Nenwenta Community, Awgu Local Government Area. The reservoir, attached to an uncompleted building owned by Onyedikachi Nkwo, fell onto the adjoining house of Raphael Onwu.
Onwu, his wife, his mother and two of his children were killed. A nine-year-old boy was pulled from the wreckage by police officers from Awgu Division, supported by the National Emergency Management Agency and local residents. The child was taken to hospital for treatment.
The five bodies were recovered and confirmed dead at the hospital before being moved to the mortuary for autopsy.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the collapse. Police spokesman SP Daniel Ndukwe said Nkwo had been detained in connection with the incident.
Giwa also expressed condolences to the bereaved family and the community, and said appropriate action would follow the outcome of the probe. Ndukwe urged the public to avoid unsafe construction practices and to engage qualified professionals to meet approved safety standards.
