Human rights lawyer and activist, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it an assault on democratic principles.
In a statement on Thursday, Ejiofor criticized the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers for six months, arguing that the decision has no constitutional basis.
“This move appears to be a calculated political maneuver aimed at appeasing a powerful political godfather rather than addressing any genuine constitutional crisis,” he said.
Citing Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Ejiofor argued that Rivers State does not meet the criteria for a state of emergency.
“There is no war, no widespread unrest, and no imminent security threat to justify such drastic action. The President’s decision is unconstitutional and a clear overreach of executive power,” he asserted.
Describing the move as “a coup against democratic institutions,” Ejiofor called on the National Assembly and the Judiciary to reject the declaration, warning that failure to act could erode Nigeria’s democratic foundation.
He commended the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for its swift response, stressing that “this is a defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy. We must not allow constitutional violations to go unchallenged. The world is watching.”
The declaration has sparked intense debate, with many questioning the legal and political motivations behind the decision.
