Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has issued a stern warning to commercial transport operators, urging them to desist from carrying flammable substances in their vehicles to safeguard passengers’ lives.
The governor’s caution follows a devastating accident along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Interchange Expressway near Muhammadu Buhari Estate, which claimed the lives of 16 people.
According to reports, a white Mazda bus with registration number KJA949YJ was carrying a filled gas cylinder when it exploded, triggering a fire outbreak that resulted in multiple fatalities.
In a statement released in Abeokuta on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun described the accident as preventable. He stressed the urgent need for stricter safety measures in handling and transporting highly flammable substances such as gas and petroleum products.
The governor called on the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to educate their members on the dangers of transporting hazardous materials. He emphasized that promoting a culture of safety and responsibility among commercial drivers is crucial in preventing similar tragedies.
Expressing his condolences, Governor Abiodun extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims, praying for divine comfort and strength during this difficult time.
He further underscored the importance of community vigilance and strict adherence to safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
“This incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers associated with transporting flammable materials. As we mourn the lives lost, it is imperative for all stakeholders, drivers, unions, and regulatory agencies to collaborate in ensuring that such disasters do not happen again,” the governor said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing passenger safety, urging all transport operators to adopt best practices and comply with safety regulations to protect lives on the roads.
