Armed men suspected to be members of the notorious ‘Mahmuda’ group launched a brutal attack on Karongi town in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State early Sunday morning, killing a vigilante and setting multiple homes ablaze.
The assailants struck at about 6:00 a.m., taking advantage of a security vacuum as many local vigilantes had traveled to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir festival. The assault continued for nearly five hours, with no immediate resistance, until security reinforcements comprising soldiers and vigilantes from a neighboring community arrived around 11:00 a.m. and repelled the attackers.
The Emir of Yashikira Emirate, Umoru Sariki, confirmed the incident, reporting one fatality and extensive property damage. He urged the Federal Government and military authorities to establish a permanent security outpost in Karongi or a nearby town to forestall future attacks.
While the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, stated that the command had not received prior information about the incident, the Nigerian Army’s 22 Brigade spokesperson, Lt. Stephen Nwankwo, confirmed the attack. He revealed that the victim was a vigilante who had joined the military response team in confronting the gunmen.
The incident has once again highlighted the rising insecurity plaguing rural communities and the critical need for a reinforced and sustained security presence in vulnerable areas.
