Gunmen in the early hours of Thursday launched a deadly attack on a local vigilante facility in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the death of one vigilante operative.
The targeted facility is reportedly part of the Agunaechemba Vigilante Network, a security initiative backed by the Anambra State Government. The attackers, believed to have come in large numbers, overwhelmed the operatives on duty during the assault.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants set five operational vehicles ablaze and partially torched the facility’s security office before fleeing the scene. One operative was fatally injured during the gun duel, while others managed to escape unharmed.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to uncover those behind the incident.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack and appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incident, describing it as a cowardly act of violence against community peace efforts. He reiterated the need for collective support in the fight against criminality.
A joint police-led security team has since taken control of the area to restore calm and pursue the perpetrators. Investigations are ongoing, and the police have assured the public that updates will be provided as more details emerge.
